Change is the one thing you can count on in today’s world of work.  Being “change resilient” and planning for your future is the key to riding the work roller coaster.  The following question and answer conversation offers career management tips for today’s worker.  The focus is on mid-career concerns and tips to overcome common obstacles.

Career Concern: “Things are changing so quickly, I can’t keep up!  What happened to the “good old days?”

  • Working in the year 2009 means you control your destiny.  Decide what you want to do and move towards your goal.  Market shifts and employment statistics should not determine your future.
  • Learn new skills, focus on what you can control.  Plan on being the best at whatever you do.  You are the source of your own job security.  Invest in yourself.
  • Be true to yourself and make decisions that will support your long-term goals. Have a forty-year plan.  Know what’s ahead and you can make better decisions.

    Understand the changing economy:
The average American has been in his/her job for three years.
A worker starting out in today’s market will have five separate careers and twelve job changes in a lifetime.
Ten years from now half of the population will be in jobs not yet invented.
In this economy job hunting is a continuous process.  You must remain marketable and keep learning.

    To compete you must
    Know yourself.
    Know the market.
Know how to compete against trained job seekers.
    Have a long-term plan.
Find balance and maintain your overall well-being

Career Concern:  “Knowing what I really want to do!”
  • Learn about the world of work.  Follow your interests and passions.  Remember to pay close attention to your natural aptitudes as well.  Interest and skill must both be present for an excellent career fit.
  • Find out where the growth is in your geographic area.
  • Determine what you are willing to sacrifice to get the career you want.
